Native to North America, balsam fir can live up to 150 years and averages 15 metres in height. It has various botanical denominations, including Abies balsamifera or Pinus balsamea. Its oleoresin, called "Canada Balm" or fir gum, is widely used in optics and pharmacies. For a long time, it was a reference in the popular medicine of Canadians.
